AFTER FOUR-YEAR WAIT | Revilla ‘cannot be held liable’ in PDAF scam – Sandiganbayan

(DECEMBER 7, 2018) – The Sandiganbayan First Division on Friday acquitted former senator Bong Revilla of plunder charges in the ten-billion peso pork barrel scam.
But Revilla’s former aide Richard Cambe and alleged mastermind Janet Lim Napoles were found guilty beyond reasonable doubt and are sentenced to reclusion perpetua or imprisonment of up to 40 years.
Revilla, for his part, will have to return P124 million to the Philippine treasury. He has also posted bail amounting to at least P400,000 for 16 counts of graft.
Voting for Revilla’s acquittal were Associate Justices Geraldine Faith Econg, Edgardo Caldona and Georgina Dumpit-Hidalgo.
Associate Justices Efren De La Cruz and Ma. Theresa Dolores Gomez-Estoesta moved for his conviction.
The Office of the Ombudsman filed the plunder case against Revilla in 2014, alleging the senator of taking P224.5 million worth of kickbacks.
Revilla, together with former senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Jinggoy Estrada, was accused of funneling million-peso pork barrel funds to non-government organizations owned or controlled by Napoles in exchange for huge kickbacks.
Revilla is now seeking reelection in the upcoming 2019 senatorial elections.
