‘BANTAYANG BAHAY’ | Homeless in Montalban holds camp in idle PNP housing site

RODRIGUEZ, RIZAL (June 13, 2018) – Around 700 members of Montalban Homeless Alliance (MHA) trooped to a housing site for police in Rodriguez, Rizal to demand occupancy of the idle units.
MHA, of which urban poor group Kadamay is affiliated, staged a “Bantayang Bahay para sa karapatan at katiyakan sa paninirahan” in the La Solidaridad – Avilon Zoo area. It said the site has been unoccupied for more than five years and has been allegedly used by the National Housing Authority (NHA) and local government for political patronage and leverage.
The group was referring to the passage of Joint Resolution 2 which states that housing units must be used for the poor and homeless in the respective localities.
MHA also lamented the lack of stable income by homeless locals which has barred them from applying for a housing program. The group refuted claims of attacking anyone in the protest, saying it was peaceful and meant to assert only their right to shelter.
Kadamay, meanwhile, warned of succeeding occupation protests should the housing situation in the country fail to improve. Last year, Kadamay took unoccupied housing units in Pandi, Bulacan.
