October 11, 2018—Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano announced Thursday that he is eyeing for the House Speakership as he is one of the first personalities to file his certificate of candidacy at the main office of the Commission on Elections.
In an interview with reporters in Bali, Indonesia, Cayetano said he seeks to return to Congress as Taguig-Pateros’ second district representative, saying he has already made plans for his comeback as a member of the House of Representatives.
“I will seek the leadership position in the House, but you know it’s a complex matter. You have to win first sa district mo, you have to win the trust and confidence of the whole Congress,” Cayetano in a chance interview with reporters today.
Should he win, the senator turned diplomat will be replacing his sister, Pia Cayetano who aims to be reelected in Senate.
Last Tuesday, President Duterte announced his former running mate’s plan to be reelected in Congress. The President says he and Cayetano have chosen a successor who is expected to be named next week.
The lead diplomat says it was supporters of President Duterte who convinced him to return to Congress, as Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is on her last term.
Their other sibling, Lino Cayetano, on the other hand, will be running as Taguig City mayor. Current mayor and Secretary Cayetano’s wife Lani Cayetano is on her last term and will be running as vice mayor.
