‘FOR WHAT?’ | Duterte denies gov’t behind the killing of Sagay farmers’ lawyer

NOVEMBER 8, 2018 – President Rodrigo Duterte denied Thursday that the government was behind the killing of human rights lawyer Benjamin Ramos in Negros Occidental.

“Kami pa ang pagbibintangan ang gobyerno. What the f*****g s**t? Why would I kill a lawyer? Napaka-small time ko naman,” Duterte said in a speech in Boracay island.

“Why would I assassinate him? For what?” he added.

Ramos, founding member of the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL), was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding assailants in Kabankalan, Negros Occidental last Tuesday.

Prior to his killing, Ramos served as legal counsel to the kin of the victims of the Sagay massacre, who were members of the National Federation of Sugarcane Workers performing a “bungkalan” activity in Hacienda Nene, Negros Occidental.

Duterte also took a swipe anew at communists occupying idle private and government properties and lands.

“Whether you have a lawyer or not, you cannot occupy somebody else’s land by force and intimidation. I will not allow it. That’s anarchy,” Duterte said.

“Kaya ‘pag pumasok kayo, my orders to the police and the military, evict them. Evict them out physically and if they choose to fight, kill them. Mabuti mag-prankahan tayo,” he added.
