NOVEMBER 9, 2018 – Malacañang on Friday said it respected the Sandiganbayan’s decision when it found former first lady and Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos guilty of multiple counts of graft.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the government will not interfere in the graft conviction over Marcos’s alleged unlawful financial interests in Swiss-based foundations while holding public office.

“The Executive Branch is not in the business of exerting undue interference or influence in the affairs of another separate and independent branch of the government,” Panelo said in a statement.

“We manifest our respect to the decision of the Sandiganbayan finding former First Lady and incumbent Ilocos Norte Representative Imelda Marcos guilty of the seven out of the ten cases filed against her,” he added.

Panelo also said the decision shows that no one is above the law.

“We treat this decision by the anti-graft court as a good reminder to all public servants that public office is a public trust and that we are all accountable to the people we serve,” Panelo said.
