KILLING SPREE?| CPP hits P300-B fund for AFP’s weaponry upgrade

Manila, Philippines- (June 24, 2018) The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) on Sunday slammed the approved P300 billion fund for the “Horizon 2” militarization upgrade of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
CPP believes that the multi-billion hardware upgrade will only focus on internal security operations rather than territorial defense of the country.
“For the AFP’s shopping spree will only help fund a more intensive and more violent killing spree under Duterte’s Oplan Kapayapaan,” CPP said in a statement.
Department of National Defense Spokesman Arsenio Andolong on Wednesday said that President Rodrigo Duterte has already approved the P300 billion additional budget for the phase 2 upgrade of the AFP.
Bulk of the fund will be used in the procurement of multi-role aircrafts, AUVs, long-range patrol aircrafts, corvettes, helicopters, and submarines.
“Second horizon is supposed to be our transition period from internal security operations to territorial defense,” Andolong said.
Spearheaded by former Presdient Benigno Aquino III back in 2013, the AFP’s modernization program is divided into three phases.
Horizon 2 is the second phase of the program that is implemented from 2018-2022.
