LABOR OF LOVE | Pregnant woman takes physician licensure exam while in labor

MARCH 21, 2019 – Eunice Stefanelle Sibuyan was due to have her first baby but still decided to take her physician’s licensure examination last March 11. Eunice finished the test just in time.

Sibuyan had been a registered nurse before deciding to become a doctor: “Nung una nurse lang yung dream ko tapos in-offer ng parents ko, may pera pa daw kami kaya full support.”

Sibuyan says she was well aware that the baby was about to arrive. A week before the exam, her cervix was already one to two centimeters dilated. The day before her test, Sibuyan says she experienced spotting and cramps.

In fact, on the day of her exam, Sibuyan says her water broke but decided to wear a diaper.

“Nalaman ko na nagstart na yung labor ko nag-rapture ang bag of water around 2 a.m. Natutulog parang may nagpump nagrapture ang bag of water kailangan may-diaper. Wala pang contractions makakapag-exam around 6 a.m. nag-start contractions, kaya pa.” said Sibuyan.

Sibuyan powered through the second exam for 45 minutes, with contraction intervals happening between 15 to 30 minutes. By the time she finished the last exam, regular contractions were happening every 3 minutes.

“Nagulat sila nang bigla akong tumayo. Ang bilis bilis ko daw po matapos pagkatapos tumayo binigay sa proctor exam papers pagkababa ko hindi ko na kinaya dun na ako sa chair. Blessing in disguise din na yung testing site ko is hospital, hindi na ako nakatayo,” said Sibuyan.

When Sibuyan arrived at the hospital beside the testing center, her cervix had fully dilated. She was rushed to the delivery room at around 3pm and gave birth after 30 minutes.

Sibuyan gave birth to a healthy baby boy, and was fortunate enough to pass the exam and become a licensed physician.

While Sibuyan does not recommend taking risks during pregnancies, she says the important lesson that women can get from her experience is to never give up on their dreams.

“Hindi hadlang na nabuntis ka o edad o may sakit, kung kaya nila ipush. Sa mga taong gustong abutin ang pangarap, kahit ano mang hirap nun abutin pa rin nila yun.” said Sibuyan.
