#OmpongPH | Around 1,600 Cagayan residents evacuate amid Ompong threat

(SEPTEMBER 14, 2018) – Close to 1,600 residents in the coastal towns of Cagayan have evacuated as Typhoon Ompong maintains its strength toward the Cagayan-Isabela area, according to Cagayan’s Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).

Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba ordered preemptive evacuation of residents from 14 barangays starting Thursday, ahead of Ompong’s expected landfall in the area on Saturday morning.

PDRRMC said its command center had to be transferred back to Tuguegarao from Lal-lo after Ompong had shifted southward.

In its 11 AM briefing, PAGASA upgraded tropical cyclone warning signal number 3 over Cagayan.

Other areas placed under signal number 3 include Babuyan group of Islands, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Northern Aurora and Isabela.

As of 10 AM, Ompong’s eye was located 540 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora with packing maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 255 kph, PAGASA reported.
