ON KILLINGS OF PRIESTS | Sotto: Let PNP do the investigation

June 14, 2018 – If Senator Risa Hontiveros wants a probe on the killings of priests, Senate President Vicente Sotto III preferred the Philippine National Police to lead the investigation of these cases.
Sotto said the Senate can conduct its own inquiry, but he cannot think of a reason to do so. “We can but I wonder what legislation can be taken up that is not in the Revised Penal Code or anything to that effect,” Sotto said.
“Mas gusto ko pang asikusahin nang mabuti ng law enforcement na masolve ang kaso,” he added, but clarified it is up to the committee head whether they would act upon Hontiveros’ resolution or not.
Sotto, meanwhile, dismissed Hontiveros claim that the spate of killings may have happened because the Church have been critical of President Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign against drugs.
“Kapag ganyan political na ‘yan. Ilayo natin ang pulitika sa importanteng legislation… makakaabala tayo sa imbestigasyon,” Sotto said.
He also said the attacks within the past six months may be a coincidence only. “Baka nagkataon lang ‘yan. 100 million ang Filipinos, ilan ang pari sa Pilipinas? I don’t think it’s a pattern.”
Sotto also claimed the shooting incidents perpetuated by riding-in-tandem groups have been going around for years, but seemed to have declined by now.
“Talagang kailangan lang mahigpit ang pagpapatupad natin. ‘Yung enforcement at prosecution [of criminals] natin dapat maigting,” he said.
