#OmpongPH | Over 4 million Pinoys expected to be affected by typhoon – NDRRMC

SEPTEMBER 14, 2018—The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) estimates that 4.24 million Filipinos will be affected by the wrath of typhoon Ompong.

In a press briefing, the disaster management bureau reports that a total of 3,510 families (15,328 persons) have been pre-emptively evacuated in regions I, II, CALABARZON and CAR.

The province of Cagayan is expected to bear the burnt of Ompong with almost 1.2 million affected residents, followed by Isabela with 1.19 million.


NDRRMC has placed five regions under red alert status—Regions I, II, III, CALABARZON and CAR—with disaster officials closely monitoring any event. Eleven other regions are under blue alert status.


PAGASA estimates typhoon Ompong to make landfall in Cagayan-Isabela area early Saturday morning. Tropical cyclone warning signal (TCWS) number 4 has been raised in Cagayan and northern Isabela while 13 other provinces are placed under TCWS number 3.

The bureau has received reports of casualties—one from the Bicol region—but has yet to verify if they are related to the typhoon’s onslaught.

Authorities are reminding residents in disaster prone areas to take appropriate actions and to coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices.
