JUNE 13, 2018 – President Rodrigo Duterte believes that the Philippines’ rice self-sufficiency target may not be achieved by 2020.

“I do not believe that we can be rice-sufficient,” Duterte said during his speech at the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the Commission on Higher Education and state colleges and universities in Malacañang.

“If you’d ask me, in the next how many years, we will just have to import rice.  ‘Yung sinabi ni Piñol na at the year’s end, istorya man lang,” he added.

Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol had earlier said that the country is 96% self-sufficient in rice and expects to achieve rice self-sufficiency by 2020. Last year, the department’s strategies mainly focused on promotion of hybrid seeds, access to credit and loans, access to right marketing, and provision of post-harvest facilities.
