(June 15, 2024) – A labor group on Saturday refuted the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) after claiming that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) dream of going abroad to provide a better life for their families.
Migrante lamented that DMW secretary Hans Leo Cacdac not only failed to explain his agency’s role in institutionalizing labor export, he also made a “false claim” on why Filipinos work abroad.
“While it is true that there are Filipinos who wish to work abroad for whatever reason, the fact is that the majority of Filipinos are forced to leave their families and put their lives on the line abroad because they cannot find local jobs that could sustain their families,” said Migrante in a media release.
In an interview with Rappler, Cacdac said the DMW serves as a place for OFWs to pursue their dreams, describing them as “simple” and “practical.”
Migrante, however, called out the DMW, other government agencies, and Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. for pretending to be servants of OFWs and “capitalizing” on their suffering.
“Despite the constant hype of ‘labor market recovery’ and ‘improvement’ by the Marcos regime, employed workers are hounded by low pay that is not enough for their families’ needs,” said Migrante.
Nationwide, the daily average minimum wage stands at P441 only or 36.5% of the daily average family living wage of P1,208.
With the country’s dire economic situation and recurring labor woes, many Filipinos seek greener pastures abroad. Partial data from the DMW showed that there were 2,525,140 OFWs in 2023.
“Labor migration is a reality forced upon Filipinos by the government because the economy relies on remittances instead of creating industries and local jobs domestically,” said Migrante.
Last March, 40.5% of Filipinos employed locally were informal workers. The figure could be higher if irregular workers in private establishments were included.
“No Filipino dreams of leaving their families and loved ones. No Filipino dreams of being abused by their employers. All OFWs want is a good life, something which they know they cannot find in the Philippines,” added Migrante.
