(September 17, 2024) – The Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality continued its inquiry about illegal POGO on Tuesday, focusing on the alleged close relationship between Sual, Pangasinan Mayor Liseldo “Dong” Calugay and former Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo, with some senators questioning their connections.
Mayor Calugay denied having a romantic relationship with Guo as photos surfaced showing both of them wearing each other’s campaign shirts and attending each other’s victory caravans.
In response, the mayor of Sual explained, “Magkaibigan lang po kami,” adding that Guo invited him to her campaign event, and he reciprocated by attending her victory caravan. Calugay also clarified that there was no active campaigning between the two, despite their visible presence at each other’s events.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros repeatedly pressed the issue, asking, “Gaano kayo ka-close? Bakit nagsusuot kayo ng campaign shirt ng isa’t isa at nasa campaign caravan ng isa’t isa?”
Meanwhile, Sen. Joel Villanueva expressed skepticism, asking if there was a deeper relationship between the two.
Sen. Jinggoy Estrada continued to raise questions about the pair, even referring to photos of them wearing matching shirts, which he labeled as “couple shirts.”
The senators continued to delve into the relationship between Sual, Pangasinan Mayor Dong Calugay and Alice Guo. During the session, photos of Calugay giving flowers to Guo were shown, raising further questions from the senators.
He explained that the flowers were a gesture of respect, as Guo had been invited to the Kasalang Bayan on February 23, 2024, in Sual. He also noted that he gave flowers to other attendees as well.
However, Sen. Hontiveros clarified that the Senate’s interest lies not in their personal relationship but in the possibility of business ties.
Hontiveros stated, “Pinaka-interes namin ay kung may sabwatan kayong dalawa para sa kadiliman at kasamaan.”
Amid the questioning, the senators also revealed the possible businesses allegedly linked to Calugay and Guo, including farms and properties.
Sen. Estrada presented documents showing construction materials purchased under both their names, but both denied any joint business ventures.
The inquiry also revealed that Guo’s secretary had sought assistance from Calugay’s executive assistant for legal matters, further fueling questions about their close ties.
Despite the denials from both parties, the Senate Committee will continue to investigate the ties between the two, particularly with regards to their involvement in business ventures and other activities.
