(June 14, 2025) – Team captain Jia de Guzman touted Alas Pilipinas for its unwavering determination against Chinese Taipei to secure a historic ticket to the 2025 AVC Women’s Volleyball Nations Cup finals.
On Friday, the Filipina spikers averted a late collapse in their thrilling five-set victory over the Taiwanese side, 25-17, 25-21, 18-25, 15-25, 15-12, to bring the Philippines to its first-ever finals appearance in an AVC-sanctioned tournament since joining the confederation in 1961.
De Guzman said the nationals already expect a tough semifinal clash with Chinese Taipei after they swept Kazakhstan in their last pool match on Thursday.
“The moment we went to the dugout, we knew that today was also going to be a hard game. But, we’re very grateful that we surpassed that test of character also,” said the veteran playmaker, as quoted by One Sports.

She stressed how difficult it is to fend off Chinese Taipei in the deciding fifth set after the latter erased Alas Pilipinas’ 2-0 advantage, acknowledging their adjustments.
“I’m just really proud of everyone in this team [Alas Pilipinas]. We just want to give our best every game,” added the former Asian import of Denso Airybees in Japan’s topflight SV.League.
Further, Eya Laure came clutch for the Philippines by unleashing six of her nine points in the fifth frame to overcome a late rally from Chinese Taipei, which cut a 9-6 deficit into one at 10-9.
Bella Belen dealt the final blow for Alas Pilipinas after a video challenge found her hit grazing the fingers of the Taiwanese blocker. The top overall pick of the 2025 Premier Volleyball League Rookie Draft finished with 15 points, 19 excellent receptions, and 16 digs.
Alyssa Solomon and Fifi Sharma added 12 and 10 markers, respectively.
Alas Pilipinas now set its sights on the gold medal match against defending back-to-back champion and host Vietnam on Saturday, June 14.
Last year, De Guzman and her company bagged the bronze medal in front of a roaring Filipino crowd in Manila. It was the country’s first podium finish in an AVC tournament.
“We’re just going to bring our best again—and no matter what, para lang talaga sa bayan ito,” said De Guzman.
