(June 2, 2025) — Former President Rodrigo Duterte has no plans of retaliating against those behind his arrest and detention at the International Criminal Court (ICC), according to his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte.
Speaking after her visit to her father in The Hague, Netherlands, Vice President Duterte said vengeance is not on the former president’s agenda, despite his controversial arrest through Interpol coordination earlier this year.
“History will tell us that former President Duterte never went after his political enemies. No one at all in his entire career who was against him politically did he go after,” she said in an interview over One PH’s One Balita Pilipinas.
In August 2016, the former president said he would “destroy” an unnamed female “government official,” hinting at then-senator Leila de Lima who was jailed for drug-related charges.
The court has cleared De Lima of the charges. De Lima was a known critic of Duterte’s war on drugs. As head of the Commission on Human Rights, De Lima also investigated Duterte’s connection with alleged vigilante killings when he was still mayor of Davao City.
The vice president flew to the Netherlands on her 47th birthday and attended a rally organized by overseas Filipinos demanding the repatriation of the former president. Despite mounting political tension, she maintained that focusing on national issues is more important than her political feud with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.
“My stand is that whatever personal problems we have with each other is not really important. What’s important is that the administration focuses on the problems we see every day in our country. We want a better government,” she said.
Vice President Duterte also said she is physically preparing for her looming impeachment trial in the Senate by staying healthy, getting adequate sleep, and following her doctors’ recommendations. Her impeachment came after a public falling out with Marcos, which led to her resignation as secretary of education last year.
When asked about the recent appointment of Major General Nicolas Torre III as the new chief of the Philippine National Police, the vice president responded only with laughter. Torre played a key role in Duterte’s arrest.
Her brother, Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, was more vocal, saying the appointment showed how “government now is not based on merit.”
Despite political friction and her father’s detention, VP Duterte expressed gratitude to Filipinos abroad for participating in the overseas voting and supporting candidates aligned with their family.
The Duterte camp has previously said that restoring unity within the administration would only be possible if the former president is allowed to return to the Philippines.
