(June 5, 2025) – Some senators are now considering supporting the House-approved proposal for a P200 daily minimum wage hike, according to Senator JV Ejercito on Thursday.
The House of Representatives passed the measure on Tuesday with overwhelming support — 172 votes in favor, zero against, and one abstention. Meanwhile, the Senate is still pushing for its version of the bill, which proposes a more modest P100 wage increase for private sector workers.
Ejercito said the Senate version was brought up among several senators on the same night it was passed, but no consensus has been reached so far.
“Kasi inflation natin sobrang taas ng bilihin ngayon. Kung P100 makakatulong ngayon. ‘Yung P200 bakit hindi? We have to strike a balance always. We have to make sure also business will be able to survive. Hindi mamamatay negosyo. Baka masyado mabigat sa [micro, small, and medium enterprises]. We don’t want to kill the goose that lays golden egg,” said Ejercito.
He didn’t name the senators who were open to the P200 hike but stressed that discussions are ongoing.
While he acknowledged the need to help workers cope with soaring prices, Ejercito also stressed the importance of checking whether businesses, especially micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), can afford it.
“Sa akin kung ano ang sagad na pwede ibigay sa manggagawa ibigay natin. Especially with rising prices of commodities, P100, ano mabibili mo diyan? Sa pang araw-araw makakatulong ‘yang P200, mas maganda, but look into it,” added Ejercito.
“Batas kakayanin ng business sector. Hanggang saan ang kaya nila. ‘Yun ang dapat balansehin. Kung kaya ibigay, ibigay natin.”
Ejercito clarified that the Senate leadership hasn’t taken an official position yet on whether to adopt the House version or stick to the P100 proposal. But with bicameral deliberations still ahead, he said there’s time to work things out.
Under House Bill No. 11376, regional wage boards will still be allowed to issue additional wage increases even after the bill is passed.
Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas called the House approval of the P200 increase a “historic moment,” citing it as a long-overdue win for workers after years of stalled proposals.
She also called on senators not to stand in the way of the measure during bicameral talks.
“Tuloy-tuloy ang pag-a-advocate sa P1,200 na nakabubuhay na sahod na kailangan ng ating mga manggagawa. This doesn’t end here. It’s a step forward, but we still need to fight for a truly living wage,” said Brosas.
