(August 28, 2024 | UPDATED – 12:10 a.m., August 29, 2024) – The House quad-committee on Wednesday lifted its second contempt order against an associate of former Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo.
Cassandra Li Ong, the incorporator of a business entity that leased the land for the raided POGO Lucky South 99 in Porac, Pampanga, was earlier cited in contempt for her refusal to answer questions related to her alleged links to a Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO).
The panel also approved a motion to detain her at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City until the legislative inquiry of the quad-committee concludes, and the committee report is adopted by the plenary.
Lawmakers in the quad-committee had prodded Ong to answer if she was aware of reports of torture and killings linked to POGOs and how she was recruited into Lucky South 99. She was also asked about the school where she studied.
Ong insisted on not answering the lawmakers’ question, citing her right to remain silent and against self-incrimination.
Hours later, Ong started to cooperate in the investigation and began answering questions from the lawmakers. She also agreed to sign a waiver to open her bank accounts.
She will remain at the House detention center.
Ong was with Shiela Guo, who was initially believed to be former mayor Guo’s sister, when they were apprehended in Indonesia and brought to the Philippines last week. This came as law enforcers searched for Alice Guo, following reports that she fled the country.
Earlier, Justice Usec. Nicholas Ty said the National Prosecution Service has recommended the filing of charges of obstruction of justice and disobedience to legislative summons against Ong.
