(June 5, 2025) – Sen. Imee Marcos on Thursday sounded the alarm on the alleged plan to once again delay the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) elections.
She claimed the efforts to proceed with the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) this year may be tied to moves to derail the BARMM polls.
“Pinagtatakahan ko kasi kung sabi nila may issues ng peace and order at kinakailangan na i-postpone ‘yung BARMM election, bakit itinuloy pa rin ‘yung local elections sa [Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in] Muslim Mindanao, where the same context and conditions prevail?” said Marcos in a forum.
Imee, the sister of Pres. Bongbong Marcos, added that some local government units opposed holding the 2025 BSKE, arguing current officials have only served for two years since the last polls in 2023.
“The Barangay and SK term will be the victim of the greed of the people clandestinely working on another BARMM election postponement,” she said.
Moro Islamic Liberation Front vice chairman Mohagher Iqbal, meanwhile, confirmed they had received reports of groups lobbying for yet another postponement.
“We are here [Senate] to appeal to the national government and Congress, and all those who are partners with the process,” said Iqbal in the forum. “Sana po ‘di na ma-postpone ito [BARMM elections]. Ready na kami at nasa democratic struggle na kami.”
Last February, the upper chamber approved Senate Bill No. 2942 on the third and final reading to postpone the BARMM elections from May 12 to October 13 due to a decision by the Supreme Court to exclude Sulu from the region.
The ruling left seven parliamentary seats vacant, entailing adjustments in BARMM’s political structure.
Former president Rodrigo Duterte previously postponed the 2022 BARMM polls after signing Republic Act No. 11593 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the absence of a Bangsamoro Electoral Code, deferring it to 2025.
The BARMM was established in 2019 to replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao after the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law. It aimed at providing greater autonomy and self-governance to the Bangsamoro people.
The Bangsamoro Transition Authority has been serving as the interim government since then.
