Flowers and chocolates are not the top choices of gifts that Filipinos want to receive this Valentine’s Day—it’s money, a survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) revealed.
Love is good but cash is better, perhaps?
In a survey last December 8 to 11, SWS said 16% of respondents said money was their top wish for gifts on February 14. It was followed by love and companionship with 11%, flowers with 10%, and apparel with 9%. Chocolates, another typical gift choice during Heart’s Day, only got 3%.
Some respondents also wished for any gift from the heart, mobile phone, watch, jewelry, and good family and relationship, with each one tallying 5%.
“More men wished for apparel and any gift from the heart while more women wished for money and flowers. Both sexes wished for love and companionship equally,” said SWS.
The other choices that emerged are food and grocery items (3%), health of loved ones (3%), motorcycle and other vehicles (2%), appliances (2%), greeting (1%), kiss (1%), a child (1%), date or dinner (1%), house (1%), cake (1%), stuffed toy (0.4%), wedding (0.3%), alcoholic drink (0.3%), and perfume and cosmetics (0.3%).
It also appeared that more than half of Filipinos are happy with the status of their love life. According to the survey, at least 58% said they were “very happy.” At least 23% said they “could be happier” while around 19% have no love life.
“The latest percentage of those very happy with their love life is the highest since the record-high 59% in 2011,” added SWS.
In addition, it noted that “most married couples are ‘very happy’ with their love life.” Among married men, roughly 76% said they are “very happy” while among married women, around 67% answered the same.
A total of 1,200 people were interviewed by SWS in the survey, which had a margin of error of ±2.8%.
This year’s Valentine’s Day coincides with Ash Wednesday or the start of the Lenten season for the Catholic faithful. It is usually marked by fasting and prayers, as devotees reflect during this period.
