(May 26, 2025) – Eastern Samar Gov. Ben Evardone on Monday expressed caution about the possible spike in prices of goods if stocks depleted in the province amid the ongoing rehabilitation of the San Juanico Bridge.
He said the Department of Trade and Industry estimated the remaining inventories in supermarkets and groceries in the province could only last until 10 days.
“Baka this week, pagka ubusan na ang susunod na inventories niyan ay posibleng mas mahal [na ang presyo] dahil sa transportation cost from Tacloban to Eastern Samar. Pareho rin ‘yung agricultural products na galing Leyte,” said Evardone in One PH’s One Balita Pilipinas.
Evardone also said he called for a council meeting on Wednesday to study if they will declare a state of emergency and request a subsidy on transportation costs for goods.
“‘Yung iba, nananawagan na mag-declare ng state of emergency para magka-freeze ng presyo. Hindi naman ganun kasimple ‘yan kasi ‘yung traders hindi na magbebenta sa’yo,” he added.
Earlier this month, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) imposed a temporary three-ton weight limit on vehicles passing the San Juanico Bridge. Pedestrians are also prohibited from accessing it.
It came after the DPWH identified defects in the 42 spans of the bridge that posed serious safety risks, including corrosion in structural members, damage in expansion joints, and deterioration in the deck slab and other components.
In a statement, the Department of Tourism Region VIII estimated an economic loss worth up to P600 million annually due to the disruptions.
The P900-million rehabilitation plan is projected to be completed by 2027.
The Department of Transportation and other concerned agencies, meanwhile, announced they are exploring alternative routes to facilitate the movement of goods and passengers.
The San Juanico Bridge links Samar and Leyte. It was completed in 1973 under the watch of former president Ferdinand Marcos, Sr.
