(May 23, 2025) – Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque emphasized his right to seek asylum following the Department of Justice’s move to cancel his passport.
“My response remains unchanged: I have exercised my human right to seek asylum to escape political persecution by Marcos Jr,” he said.
This comes after the DOJ stated that it would write to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to request the cancellation of Roque’s passport.
Roque is currently in the Netherlands for his asylum application process.
According to the DOJ, if his asylum request is not approved, Roque would be considered an undocumented alien.
“The Marcos Jr. administration has been intent on silencing me through a bogus, non-bailable charge. When the House committee failed to have my passport cancelled to compel my extradition to the Philippines, they resorted to filing this fabricated case as a fallback,” Roque said.
“The Philippine government should not be so arrogant, especially when European countries—including the Netherlands—uphold human rights and the right to asylum in cases of political persecution. If they already failed in Timor-Leste, they stand even less of a chance here,” he added.
Roque also challenged Pres. Marcos to undergo a hair follicle test.
It can be recalled that a court in Angeles, Pampanga issued an arrest warrant against Roque and others over their alleged involvement in the illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) hub “Lucky South 99” in Porac, Pampanga.
The Department of Justice previously said it is preparing the documents necessary to request the issuance of an Interpol Red Notice against Roque.
