(May 1, 2025) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday cleared the son of a slain Filipino-Chinese businessman from involvement in his father’s case due to lack of evidence.
PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said they dropped Alvin Tan as a suspect in the abduction and murder of Anson Tan because the alleged mastermind, David Tan Liao, couldn’t back his claim that the younger Tan ordered the crime.
“‘Yung sinasabi niyang (Liao) restaurant na pinuntahan nila, may mga tawag sila between him and Alvin Tan, wala siyang mapatunayan doon,” said Fajardo in a media conference.
She also confirmed that the PNP will submit a motion before the Department of Justice (DOJ) to remove the name of Alvin from the list of respondents.
“All we know ay mina-muddle niya (Liao) ‘yung investigation para hindi natin matumbok ‘yung ibang mga kasamahan niya and possibly mastermind behind not just this kidnapping case of Anson Tan but pati na rin ‘yung ibang kidnapping case,” added Fajardo.
Liao surrendered to the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group on April 19, while his Filipino cohorts Richardo Austria David and Raymart Catequista were arrested in Palawan on April 18.
The PNP also identified Chinese nationals Wenli Gong and Jonin Lin as suspects. Both remain at large, as of writing.
On Wednesday, the PNP said a concerned citizen offered a P5 million for information that could lead to the arrest of Wenli, who’s also known as Kelly Tan Lim, Bao Wenli, Axin, and Huang Yanling.
She reportedly negotiated with Tan’s family and lured him and his driver, Armanie Pabillo, to a house in Meycauayan, Bulacan under the pretense of a meeting.
On April 9, they were found dead on a roadside in Rodriguez, Rizal. Their bodies showed signs of bruises, injuries, and strangulation, according to the PNP.
Tan’s family reportedly paid a ransom of P100,000 but he and Pabillo were still killed.
They were kidnapped on March 29 when they were on their way to a meeting in Parañaque.
