(May 31, 2025) — Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio on Friday downplayed the significance of reconciling with Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr., saying personal matters should take a backseat to public service.
“Unang-una, hindi muna siguro ako magsalita about reconciliation dahil hindi naman mahalaga siguro ang mga personal na problema ng mga tao,” she said in an interview with the media at The Hague, Netherlands.
“Ang mas mahalaga ay iyong taumbayan at iyong bayan natin.”
Duterte-Carpio shared some updates with reporters after visiting her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained in The Hague. Netherlands.
This came after Marcos’ podcast interview expressed openness to reconciling with the Dutertes.
Duterte-Carpio chose not to address any efforts toward reconciliation, instead emphasizing the need to focus on national issues.
Her visit to the former president coincided with his birthday, a moment Duterte-Carpio described as special.
“Masaya siya noong nakita niya kami kasi alam niya na nandoon kami to celebrate pre-birthday with him and my mother.”
Duterte-Carpio also noted that they discussed his father’s desire to formally take his oath as mayor-elect of Davao City.
“Napag-usapan din namin iyong oath niya, at pag-uusapan daw nila ng lawyers niya kung paano [ang] gawin [sa] kanyang oath. Pero, initially and sinabi niya, ‘I want… Set me free and I will take an oath.'”
Moreover, on the issue of impeachment, Duterte-Carpio expressed her full agreement with the recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showing 88% of Filipinos believe she should face the impeachment process to answer allegations.
“I totally agree. Kasama ako diyan sa 88% na ‘yan. Ako ay thankful sa opportunity na malinis ‘yung pangalan ko at masagot ‘yung mga akusasyon sa akin.”
Duterte-Carpio was impeached by the House of Representatives last February after 215 lawmakers voted in favor — well beyond the one-third threshold required to transmit the case to the Senate. She is facing charges of violating the Constitution, bribery, graft and corruption, and betrayal of public trust.
She is the first vice president in Philippine history to be impeached by the lower chamber.
