(March 7, 2022) – Presidential candidate Faisal Mangondato on Sunday remained hopeful that he would get the endorsement of President Rodrigo Duterte for the 2022 elections due to his track record and his plans to continue the good programs that the administration did over the last six years.
Mangondato, running under Katipunan ng Kamalayang Kayumanggi, said his background and platform might convince Duterte to support his candidacy even if he’s relatively unknown compared to most of his opponents.
“Wala tayong kasalanan sa gobyerno (at) wala tayong record na masama sa gobyerno,” said Mangondato after his campaign rally in Marawi City. “Tiyak na maganda ‘yung ating record. Dapat (kung sino) ‘yung maganda ang record na gusto manungkulan ay ‘yun ang suportahan ng administrasyon.”
Duterte, who only has three months left in office, has not yet endorsed any presidential bet. But he told voters in a speech last week in Ilocos Sur that they may choose which Ilocano they would like to elect in Malacañang after noting that many of his Cabinet members hail from the region.
His daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, serves as the running mate of presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos Jr. who considers Ilocos as his bailiwick.
Duterte holds a strong influence in Mindanao, where Mangondato also came from.
Mangondato, a businessman, said he will prioritize the rebuilding of Marawi City if he wins as president, lamenting the sorry state of the area nearly five years since the devastating siege took place.
“Ipapatayo natin (ang mga nasira). Dahil Maranao ako, alam ko ‘yung nararamdaman ng mga kapatid na Maranao dahil na-experience ko ito,” said Mangondato, adding he stayed in Marawi City for three days during the long siege.
Mangondato fell short of clinching a senatorial seat in the 2019 midterm elections but he decided to run for president because of the problematic system that allows those in power to influence the government. He said many politicians tend to favor the interests of their friends and family once elected to power.
“Lahat ng kumakandidato ay nagbibigay ng gustong solusyon sa lahat ng problema pero dahil sa marumi at bulok na sistema ay hindi magawan ng paraan ng lahat ng naluklok na pangulo sa ating bansa (ang mga isyu),” said Mangondato.
Mangondato and his running mate, Atty. Carlos Serapio are advocating for federalism—one of the goals that Duterte failed to achieve despite massive support from the House of Representatives.
Mangondato called on the Muslim community to stand united to achieve the calls they have been pushing for over the past few years.
“Dapat tulungan natin ‘yung taong gustong manungkulan nang matupad natin ‘yung mga hangarin natin na magkaroon tayo ng magandang buhay na matagal na nating ninanais,” said Mangondato.
