August 25, 2019 – Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao on Saturday announced six shoo-ins in the final 12-man lineup of Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA World Cup which will run from August 31 to September 15 in China.
In an interview with Radyo Singko’s Power & Play with Noli Eala, the national team coach named Gabe Norwood (team captain), Andray Blatche, Japeth Aguilar, June Mar Fajardo, Troy Rosario, and RR Pogoy in the final roster.
“Syempre si Blatche nandyan na, ‘yung big man natin. si Japeth, Japeth has been playing well and he is a key member of our frontline, si gabe Norwood na team captain natin and then si June Mar syempre we need his size… He needs to make adjustment in terms of quickness,” Guiao said.
“Troy Rosario, we need his athletic abilities and outside shooting. Ang ginagawa natin kay Troy dito sa Pilipinas naglalaro ng kwatro, sa international kino-convert ko siya ng tres para lumaki tayo sa wings. And then kailangan talaga natin ‘yung pinaka-masasabi nating shooter, si RR Pogoy,” he added
Placed in Group D of the 32-nation showpiece, Gilas is set to face Angola, Italy, and title-contender Serbia at the Foshan International Sports and Cultural Center.
Guiao is expected to name the six remaining players of his roster until Monday.
