707 AND COUNTING | Coronavirus infections in Philippines breach 700 mark, death toll at 45
March 26, 2020 , 06:55 PM

(March 26, 2020) – The health department has announced 71 additional COVID-19 cases, bringing the country’s total confirmed coronavirus infections to 707, with seven new deaths.

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III attributed the high daily figures to the government’s increased COVID-19 testing capacity. The death toll now stands at 45, with the confirmatory results of most of the latest fatalities only coming in long after they had been tested.

Thursday’s virtual press briefing was the first for Duque in weeks after the health secretary himself underwent quarantine procedures after having been exposed to a senior health official who had contracted the virus.

According to the DOH, the oldest casualty was an 87-year-old from Sultan Kudarat, known as Patient number 600, who died on March 14. Test results had only recently shown that he was positive for the virus.

Patient number 354 was an 80-year-old from Rizal who had not traveled abroad nor had been exposed to a confirmed case. She died on March 13 but her positive test result for COVID-19 was only made known on March 20.

Like all of the eight, Patient number 278 had no travel nor exposure history. She was a 72-year-old from San Juan who was found COVID-positive and died on March 25.

Patient number 636, a 56-year-old from Pampanga, died on March 24. Test results that showed he was positive for the virus came a day after he succumbed to the disease. He, too, had not traveled abroad nor was exposed to a confirmed case.

Patient number 540, a 50-year-old from Pasig, died on March 20, four days before his test results came in.

At 46 years old, the last two new fatalities were both below the usual age range of people known to be more susceptible to contracting and dying from the virus.

Patient number 327 was from Laguna who died on March 15 and was confirmed positive for COVID-19 on March 21. Patient number 321 was from Rizal, who was declared positive for the disease on March 21 but died two days later.

Health authorities, however, have noticed an increasing number of recoveries from the disease.

Patient number 112, a 41-year-old from Makati who had traveled to Japan, was found positive of the disease on March 14, while Patient number, a 69-year-old from Marikina, was confirmed positive on March 10.

The two were discharged on March 21 and 22, respectively.

Across the world, there were now 203 overseas Filipinos positive for the coronavirus in 25 countries.

Health authorities said they are fast-tracking the expansion of testing centers for COVID-19 to help cut the current backlog at the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa. (Christian de Lano Deiparine/JMF)
