A REAL FIGHTER | Twink Macaraig, veteran journalist passes away at 55
January 14, 2020 , 04:18 PM

(JANUARY 14, 2020) – News anchor and veteran broadcast journalist Muriel “Twink” Macaraig on Tuesday lost in her battle against breast cancer. She was 55.

Family, friends and co-workers remember her as a tough fighter in life.

The daughter of a former top Malacañang official in the Corazon Aquino administration, Twink, as she was fondly called by fellow journalists, was a news anchor at News5.

In her Reaksyon interview in 2017, Macaraig bared her second bout with cancer 10 years after being she was declared free of it the first time.

Macaraig had also served as a senior manager in TV5 concurrent with her duties as anchor in Aksyon News Alert, as one of the rotating anchors in the then-monthly documentary Kaya, and the weekly business show Bigtime.

“I’ve long made peace with my demise. My last will and testament—handwritten amidst many tears—is in the safe. I could Give Up. Succumb. Surrender. But I won’t,” Macaraig wrote in a May 24, 2019 column for the Philippine Star.

“While the very heart of me—that chamber that stores my conscience and conviction, love and dreams, memory and self-respect—remains unbreached, I will fight.”

Before joining TV5, she was also a news anchor for ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC), a former Channel News Asia correspondent in Manila and a former Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) president.

She also got her works published in Esquire Philippines and the Philippine Star. Macaraig was also a part-time faculty member at the UP College of Mass Communication.

Her sibling, Mynardo, was the former Manila correspondent for the French news agency AFP in Manila.

She was survived by her spouse. (Randell Ritumalta/MM)
