(July 5, 2021) – Vice President Leni Robredo and several government officials expressed grief and offered condolences after an aircraft of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) crashed in Patikul, Sulu on Sunday.
Robredo said she trusts the Armed Forces of the Philippines to do what’s necessary and offered to help any way she can.
“Nakikiramay ako sa mga pamilya at mahal sa buhay ng mga nasawi sa pagbagsak ng C-130 aircraft kaninang tanghali sa Sulu,” said Robredo in a statement. “Buo ang aking tiwala sa AFP at iba pang ahensiya na kasalukuyang nagsasagawa ng search and retrieval operations. Handang tumulong ang aming tanggapan sa anumang paraan.”
Sen. Joel Villanueva also expressed his sympathies to the soldiers who perished aboard the aircraft, saying a full probe must be conducted to prevent any further lives lost.
“We trust that the circumstances that led to the crash will be thoroughly probed, as ordered by SND (Secretary of National Defense) (Delfin) Lorenzana before our air assets are allowed to fly again,” said Villanueva. “No Filipino soldier, who lays his life for our country, should die from our own military hardware.”
Sen. Grace Poe echoed Villanueva, pushing for more safety measures for the country’s military assets.
“At the right time, we expect a thorough investigation of the incident to see what can be done to avoid a repeat of the tragic crash and to put in place measures to make our military planes safe,” said Poe.
The C-130 plane, carrying 96 individuals, crashed at around 11:30 AM on Sunday after failing to regain power after missing its landing.
Based on the latest report from the AFP, 49 military personnel died, while three civilians also perished. At least 50 people were injured, 32 of which were evacuated to Zamboanga City while 18 were rushed to Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista Hospital in Brgy. Busbus in Sulu.
All passengers, pilots, and crew have been retrieved.
“Rest assured that the Philippine Army is ready to provide assistance to their families and take care of the wellbeing of the injured personnel. Our hearts are with all the people who are sorrowed by this tragedy,” said PAF spokesperson Col. Ramon Zagala.
The search for the black box of the C-130 plane, which the Philippines brought from the United States two years ago, is still ongoing.
The United States Department of Defense has offered assistance to the families of the fallen soldiers.
“We offer our sincere condolences to the government of the Philippines and the families of those lost in the crash in Sulu. We will continue to provide (Department of National Defense) support and assistance in response to this tragedy,” said secretary Lloyd Austin III in a Twitter post. (PM)
