MAY 16, 2019 — (UPDATED) Father Edwin Gariguez , executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA) is calling for a suspension of the proclamation of election winners in the national level.
Gariguez says the integrity of the just-concluded polls are questionable but he’s not directly accusing the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and Smartmatic of manipulating the polls.
“Ang aming kahilingan ay seryosohin yung allegation, actually hindi naman natin sinasabi direkta na may dayaan, mayroong allegations of fraud and manipulation so what we are requesting or demanding to do is to suspend the proclamation until these allegations have been validated or disproved,”Father Gariguez said.
The prelate is also calling on a probe into the two entities to ensure that glitches and delays experienced from election day to the transmittal of votes did not compromise the election’s credibility.
“Ang hinihiling namin din concretely ay magbuo, para makita kung may validity itong allegations, ay gumawa ng independent at impartial investigation,”Father Gariguez said.
“It may be a citizen’s body, PPCRV or Namfrel pero dapat mayroong mag-imbestiga,” he added.
Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said Wednesday the poll body is open to have independent third parties to run a technical audit on the transmission of election results.
She went on to assure the public that there is no reason to doubt the credibility of the results, despite the 7-hour delay during its transmission.
