(July 18, 2024) – Despite the rosy pronouncements of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. about the economy, 58% of Filipino families still consider themselves poor, a survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed on Thursday.
The tally was 12% higher from 46% in March and the highest since 59% in June 2008, added SWS.
The survey also found that 12% consider themselves to be on the borderline between poor and not poor—a drop from 30% in March.
“The estimated numbers of SRP (self-rated poor) families were 16.0 million in June 2024 and 12.9 million in March 2024,” wrote SWS.
The survey showed that the highest percentage of SRP families was in Mindanao at 71%, followed by Visayas at 67%, Balance Luzon at 52%, and Metro Manila at 39%.
Compared to March 2024, the SRP increased by 15 points in Mindanao (from 56%), 14 points in Balance Luzon (from 38%), and by six points in Metro Manila (from 33%). It rose slightly by three points in Visayas (from 64%).
“In the past, the median SRP gap has generally been half of the median SRP threshold. This means that typical poor families lack about half of what they need to not consider themselves poor,” added SWS.
The survey was conducted from June 23 to July 1.
A recent survey by Pulse Asia found that addressing inflation remains the primary concern of Filipinos. Additionally, many Filipinos expressed dissatisfaction with the administration’s performance in controlling the prices of basic goods and other essential commodities.
The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that food inflation rose to 6.5% in June from 6.1% in May, primarily due to increased prices of meat and vegetables.
Last May, presidential adviser for poverty alleviation Larry Gadon claimed that poverty in the Philippines is just “haka-haka” or imaginary. The disbarred lawyer, who was appointed by Marcos, was chastised by sectoral groups for his remark.
Early this year, Marcos set an ambitious goal to reduce the poverty rate to 9% by the end of his term.
He has been criticized by progressive groups, saying he prioritizes projects that only benefit a select few and not the marginalized sectors.
