(May 1, 2025) – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Thursday conducted a surprise inspection of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, vowing to make improvements amid persisting problems.
They said it in line with Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr.’s directive to enhance travel for all passengers passing through the country’s main gateway.
“We are determined to show that change is happening at our airports. What we saw today was encouraging, and we will continue working to fix bottlenecks, upgrade systems, and respond to the needs of travelers,” said BI commissioner Joel Anthony Viado in a media release.
He touted immigration officers for staying consistent in their service despite earlier challenges.
“Parehas ang tutok natin sa DOTR—we are all focused on transformation. The traveling public deserves a safe, secure, and seamless airport experience,” added Viado.
NAIA, which served over 50 million passengers in 2024, has been repeatedly named the world’s worst airport by international firms in recent years.
In November, a marketing company from Australia gave NAIA an average score of 3.8 out of 5 from Google user ratings and lower marks in key areas: 6.6 for efficiency, 6.6 for accessibility, 6.1 for service, and 6.8 for cleanliness.
NAIA has often faced criticisms over flight delays, inadequate facilities, poor internet connectivity, safety concerns, and sanitation problems.
San Miguel Corp. has taken over the operations of NAIA under the government’s privatization strategy aimed at improving the airport. Familiar challenges, however, have remained.
In March, a 69-year-old woman reported that security personnel at NAIA accused her of carrying a bullet in her handbag. She denied the allegation and the involved officers were fired by the DOTr.
In October, the 20-year-old baggage handling system at Terminal 3 broke down.
Passengers have also complained about the steep increase in parking fees since SMC took over, with overnight rates jumping from P480 to P1,200.
