(July 1, 2022) – Former Vice President Leni Robredo on Friday launched a foundation aiming to continue the advocacy programs she carried out during her term at the Office of the Vice President (OVP), stressing the need to sustain the gains they achieved.
Robredo, now back to being a lawyer, said the people should not lose the fire that they developed through volunteerism. She believes that the establishment of the Angat Buhay Foundation as a non-government organization (NGO) will keep the determination to help.
“Hindi man tayo nagwagi, nagtagumpay pa rin tayo,” said Robredo during the launch in Quezon City. “We really started something very, very special during the campaign. At hindi puwede na mapupunta sa wala ‘yung ating naumpisahan.”
Robredo first announced the creation of the initiative during her thanksgiving event at Ateneo de Manila University after losing her presidential bid. It is an expansion of her flagship Angat Buhay program with the OVP.
It will still focus on four key areas covering health, education, disaster relief and rehabilitation, and community engagement. As with the OVP, it will need the help of the private sector to carry out projects. She already signed an agreement to put up a dormitory for indigent students of Southern Luzon State University.
Robredo noted that volunteer groups can also initiate their own projects in their localities. She stressed that this decision is consistent with their belief in participatory governance, allowing the people to act without waiting for any signal from the central body.
“Pagtulung-tulungan natin na palakasin at saka mag-capacity building sa lahat ng volunteer groups na nabuo. Para maging independent din ‘yung lahat na grupo. Kayo ‘yung magiging local implementors ng ating Angat Buhay program,” explained Robredo.
Robredo, in her final interview as vice president, took pride in transforming the OVP into an advocacy-driven one, shunning the typical view that her position was a mere “spare tire.” The Angat Buhay program, which has helped over 620,000 families in more than 220 cities, was launched in October 2016 to deliver services to marginalized communities.
She was also praised for her efforts during the COVID-19 crisis when the OVP provided teleconsultation services, care kits, vaccination, free swab tests, free shuttle services, and free dormitories, among others.
“Marami pa tayong gagawin moving forward pero gusto kasi natin, ‘yung grupo natin, sinasalamin niya ‘yung klase ng governance na pinapaniwalaan natin,” said Robredo.
Robredo lauded the people who took part in the creation of the Angat Buhay Foundation, noting that it was borne out of their sense of hope, something that did not wane even after suffering a huge loss to President Bongbong Marcos Jr.
“LAHAT NG GINAGAWA NATIN AT GAGAWIN PA, NAG-UUGAT SA PAG-ASA”

“Pag-asa ang nasa likod ng lahat ng pagsisikap at pagtataya noong nakaraang kampanya. Pag-asa na kung magmahal tayo, pag-asa na kung itodo natin ang pagmamahal na ito ay may maaabot tayong pagbabago,” said Robredo.
