APPEAL TO LGUs | Refrain from using schools as evacuation centers – DepEd
January 17, 2020 , 08:24 PM

BrionesJANUARY 17, 2020 – The education department appealed anew to local government units on Friday to avoid using schools as evacuation sites, after the Taal volcano eruption that displaced hundreds of thousands of residents in southern Tagalog provinces.

Secretary Leonor Briones said classes have been affected in some 168 schools being used as temporary shelters. Based on the agency’s data, around 1,000 students were not able to go to school out of the estimated 2.4 million students affected by the volcano’s eruption.

“Sana iwasan natin ‘yung paggamit ng school buildings as evacuation centers dahil nadi-disrupt ang classes,” Briones told reporters in an event in Pasay City. “So ngayon pag-uusapan kung maghanap ng lugar kung saan makaput-up ‘yung tinatawag nilang temporary learning shelters.”

Briones said there had been a recommendation to hold classes in the morning and allow evacuees to spend the night in schools, but she believed this would entail a complicated setup. She advised local officials to build their own temporary shelters instead.

In times of disasters, schools have been often used as temporary evacuation sites for affected residents.

“We’re trying to solve the problem of the learners whose classes have been suspended by negotiating the local government to involve the governors, the mayors so that they can identify spaces where they can put up temporary shelters for the evacuees,” Briones said.

Due to the heavy ashfall coming from the volcano, classes remain suspended in Batangas and Cavite where a state of calamity has been declared.
