JUNE 12, 2019 — The ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino—Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) has tasked Senator Manny Pacquiao to announce the party’s official nominee for House speakership in the incoming 18th Congress.
PDP-Laban president Senator Aquilino Pimentel III bared that Pacquiao has been tasked to name the party’s official contender for the speakership.
“As party President I am delegating the task and responsibility of announcing the Party’s nominee for Speaker of the House to our campaign manager of the recently concluded, successful national and local elections, Sen. Manny Pacquiao,” Pimentel said in a statement.
Pimentel made the remark after leaders of the ruling party met on Tuesday night. A photo shared by PDP-Laban Public Information Committee Chairman Ronwald Munsayac showed that among those who attended the dinner meeting were reelected Davao del Norte 1st District Representative and ousted Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, Pampanga 3rd District Representative Aurelio Gonzales, Jr., and Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco. All three are vying for the Lower House’s top position.
Pimentel said the party will have one nominee to be chosen from three contenders.
“We will unite behind a single nominee chosen among these three distinguished congressmen: former Speaker and Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco.” he said in a statement.
Apart from Gonzales, Alvarez, and Velasco, other candidates for speakership are Leyte congressman-elect Martin Romualdez and Tagiug congressman-elect Alan Peter Cayetano.
