(October 12, 2021) – The leader of a small political party on Tuesday denied rumors its standard bearer is the “secret candidate” of President Rodrigo Duterte, describing it as part of black propaganda to discredit the mayor of the capital city.
Ernest Ramel Jr. argued Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso would rather run for a second term where he will most likely win, rather than give up his chances just to be a “Duterte Lite.”
“Hindi naman po para sayangin po ni Mayor Isko Moreno ang Manila… na mag-mayor pa siya kasi po napakadali po sa kanyang manalo doon. In fact, he could have been unopposed had he ran for a second term,” Ramel said in CignalTV’s One News channel’s “Sa Totoo Lang.”
“Why give that up para lang maging administration candidate ka? Para lang ikaw yung sabihin na meron pang alegasyon ang kabila? Duterte Lite. Alam mo, isang malaking kalokohan po yan.”
Last month, a news article circulated saying Moreno’s camp has borrowed the chief of staff of Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go who wanted an “insurance” after the president steps down from power next year.
Domagoso himself laughed off the rumors, saying that people who come up with these rumors have to be “high on drugs.” Go also called out the rumors as fake news.
Antonio Trillanes IV, an ally of Vice President Leni Robredo, also raised suspicions of Domagoso’s supposed plans to be a neutral candidate, saying that his rhetoric mirrored Duterte’s tirades after he lambasted Robredo last week.
Pre-election surveys showed that Domagoso ranked among the top contenders to succeed Duterte after the June 2022 elections.
Although the mayor has previously been the subject of tirades by Duterte, he has not been much vocal about his criticisms of the president’s policies, a convenor of opposition coalition 1SAMBAYAN said last month.
Ramel said Aksyon Demokratiko’s presidential candidate has been criticizing the administration, so any claims that they are being used by the administration has to be black propaganda.
The people should be allowed to judge presidential candidates’ platforms rather than resort to black propaganda too early, he added.
“Aksyon Demokratiko ay dati na pong bumabatikos sa administrasyon na ito, sa mga ginagawa nilang kamalian o kakulangan sa serbisyo sa bayan so hindi po kami papayag na kami naman po ay magagamit,” Ramel said.
