(August 13, 2021) – Aksyon Demokratiko remains open for negotiations with the opposition coalition 1SAMBAYAN despite turning down an earlier offer to form an alliance over concerns of being caught in the political crossfire.
Aksyon Demokratiko chairperson Ernesto Ramel Jr. said they want to veer away from the political tags of “Dilawan” or “DDS” since many Filipinos have grown tired of the stereotyped assumptions. Instead, he said they would like to pursue their thrust of being a “unifying force.”
“Masyado nang polarized ang ating bayan, ‘yung awayan ng DDS at Dilawan,” said Ramel on One News’ The Chiefs. “Lagi na lang ganyan ang naratibo, mas magaling daw si ganito, mas mahusay si ganyan, so ‘di na tayo naka-move forward.”
Aksyon Demokratiko, a relatively small party, made headlines recently after Manila Mayor Isko Moreno jumped to the group from the more powerful National Unity Party. Many believe this was done as part of his preparations to run for president in the 2022 elections but he has yet to confirm the speculations.
Moreno was immediately appointed as Aksyon Demokratiko president shortly after his membership to the party founded by the late former senator Raul Roco.
Though the party remains open to another round of talks with 1SAMBAYAN, Ramel said it is unlikely for them to join forces since Aksyon Demokratiko has already rejected it in the past. But he said they want to hear the other proposals that the opposition coalition would like to raise regarding the 2022 elections.
“Kung merong issues na puwedeng magkasundo at magsuportahan, bakit hindi magsuportahan kung gustong magtulak ng certain issues at certain principles,” said Ramel.
He added they are also open to talking with Sen. Manny Pacquiao on particular matters, similar to their treatment of 1SAMBAYAN and other political groups.
Last month, Aksyon Demokratiko also held a meeting with Sen. Ping Lacson, a confirmed presidential candidate, along with his running mate Senate President Tito Sotto III. No final agreement was reached in the meeting but Sotto described it as “auspicious.”
1SAMBAYAN was the first political group that publicly declared its efforts to unify the opposition but its target nominees, including Vice President Leni Robredo, have yet to respond two months before the filing of certificates of candidacy.
Robredo, for her part, has also started talking to other politicians, including Lacson, Pacquiao, and Sen. Richard Gordon, to build a “broad base” that could face President Rodrigo Duterte’s allies.
“We’d just like to unite our nation, unite our countrymen towards a common goal,” said Ramel. “I think ang pinaka-importante ngayon ay ‘yung usapang pandemya at iba pang basic needs ng ating mga kababayan. So panahon na para balikan natin at tutukan ‘yun, and let’s unify towards those goals.”
