(May 4, 2022) – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) planned to set up medical assistance desks in polling centers on the election day next week as a precaution to prevent a possible surge of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), an official of the poll body said on Wednesday.
Comelec commissioner George Garcia said the medical desks will serve to provide immediate treatment to voters who are found to have symptoms of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on the voting day next Monday.
“Maliban doon sa tinatawag nating Voter Assitance Desk, iba pa yung medical assitance desk, para daw yung mga makikita na may sintomas ng COVID-19, ay mabigyan rin ng karampatang treatment,” Garcia said.
Another commissioner, Aimee Neri, has been engaging with the Department of Health (DOH) as well as with other agencies such as the Department of the Interior and Local Government and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to provide them equipment in preparation for the health protocols in the voting day, he said.
“Gusto nika kasi COVID-free ang ating lahat ng mga polling places on election day,” Garcia said.
The DOH reported 134 new COVID-19 cases nationwide on Wednesday as infections remained relatively low in the past few weeks. But health experts fear that the country could see a spike in infections later this month if the minimum health standards are not maintained.
Health undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje, who chairs the National Vaccination Operations Center’s (NVOC), clarified on Tuesday’s One PH’s One Balita Pilipinas that a surge is still unlikely to happen shortly after the elections as long as people continue to comply with the minimum public health standards.
She also noted that COVID-19 cases in the national capital region still remain low.
Experts are still urging the public to get booster shots against COVID-19 amid concerns over the slowing of vaccinations in the country, fearing that this could cause a surge in the future as immunity against the virus naturally wanes.
The country has fully vaccinated 68.3 million or around 62% of the population, but only 13.6 million have received booster doses.
Cabotaje suggested setting up vaccination sites in polling precincts on the election day to entice more people to get vaccinated.
Garcia was against the proposal, as this could lead some voters, especially the unvaccinated, to mistakenly assume that people need to get vaccinated before voting, which may discourage some of them to vote.
“I’m for vaccination, but it’s (election day) not a proper time,” he said.
