(July 4, 2024) – Sen. Nancy Binay on Thursday slammed Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano for his claim that she influenced the media to favor her narrative, connecting the new Senate building issue to the Makati-Taguig political rivalry.
Binay said Cayetano owes the media an apology for accusing them of being paid by her.
“Di katanggap-tanggap ang binato niyang accusation sa media, particularly sa Senate media, at lalo na sa mga radio anchor na nag-interview sa akin,” said Binay. “Parang sinabi niya, on record, na nagpapadala ako ng tanong sa media kaya raw pare-pareho.”
Last Wednesday, Cayetano led the probe into the rising cost of the construction of the new Senate building in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
Cayetano’s wife, Lani Cayetano is the mayor of Taguig. The Cayetanos are a political dynasty in the city.
During the hearing, Binay claimed that the cost stands at P21.7 billion only. Cayetano, however, insisted that the cost has reached P23 billion due to land acquisition.

The two senators then engaged in a heated exchange, with Cayetano accusing Binay of paying the media. He even called her “buang” or crazy and “Marites,” a slang for someone engaged in gossip and rumor-mongering. Binay walked out of the inquiry.
“We don’t expect him to behave as such, considering that he is among the most senior senators. ‘Yung asal niya is very unbecoming of a senator,” said Binay. “Tanggap ko nang ganoon ang ugali niya basta apelyido mo’y Binay.”
Their families have been bickering for years over territorial domain involving Makati, which the Binays rule, and Taguig.
Also, Binay was replaced by Cayetano as the chairman of the committee on accounts during the revamp of the Senate leadership last May.
Binay added that she is considering filing an ethics complaint against Cayetano after reviewing the whole transcript with her legal team.
“Magkokonsulta muna ako sa staff ko kung ano ang appropriate action to take,” said Binay.
