(MAY 20, 2019) – The results of the 2019 midterm elections are testament to insufficient voter education among some Filipinos, two former lawmakers said.
Senatorial candidate Neri Colmenares, who currently stands 24th in the partial, official tally of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), said there is no such thing as “bobotante.”
“The people should not be blamed for the [skewed] results here. It’s the system that really compromised the election,” the former Bayan Muna representative said in an interview with One News’ Agenda.
Colmenares vowed to continue pushing for electoral reforms even outside public office.
“I will continue to advocate for electoral reforms, but more than that, societal reforms para sa ikabubuti ng ating bayan,” he said.
Otso Diretso senatorial bet Erin Tañada echoed Colmenares’ sentiment, saying Filipino voters should be made aware of their choices in the polls.
“The problem here really is not the people who voted. It’s understanding [and] reaching out to them to tell them how important the votes they are going to cast,” he said in the Agenda interview.
“I think theres a need to go reach out and organize people that this vote is not just about voting for the popular. [It’s not about] voting for those who can dance.”
The former House deputy speaker is currently at the 27th spot in Comelec’s partial, official tally.
No candidate from the opposition made it to the “Magic 12.”
The Comelec has been under fire for supposedly refusing to disclose the “real” score behind the technical glitches that marred last week’s polls.
The poll body, though, has time and again denied allegations of irregularities in the conduct of these year’s elections.
