(October 25, 2021) – Carlos Yulo has made good on his promise to his sister.
Yulo, in a message to his younger sibling Elaiza, vowed to bounce back after falling short of defending his title in the floor exercise at the 2021 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan on Saturday.
So, that’s exactly what he did.
On Sunday, the Filipino gymnastics wonder wowed the crowd with his impressive performance in the vault. His inspired execution of a Kasamatsu double twist and a Dragulescu earned him an average score of 14.866, edging out seven other competitors to bag the gold medal.
Yulo’s exceptional performance did not end in the vault as he also brought home the silver medal in parallel bars. His routine got a total score of 15.300, trailing China’s Hu Xuwei with 15.466.
Elaiza, who’s also a gymnast and has competed in national competitions, could not help but be emotional at the triumphant campaign of her elder brother. Yulo’s win is also a great gift for Elaiza who turned 12 years old last October 24.
“I feel blessed. ‘Di niya po binreak ‘yung promise niya sa’kin—sabi niya po kasi babawi siya,” said Elaiza in an interview with News 5. “Kuya Caloy, wait mo lang kami diyan ni Kuya Eldrew. Tatlo na tayong kukuha ng gold sa Olympics.”

After seeing his brother’s magnificent performance, Eldrew, who has won multiple gold medals in the Palarong Pambansa, also had a little joke.
“Di ko na siya matatalo. Ayoko na,” said Eldrew with a laugh.
In 2019, Yulo handed the Philippines its first-ever gold medal in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in the floor exercise. But the 21-year-old athlete was unable to defend his title due to a costly 0.3 penalty after landing out of bounds last Saturday.
His mother, Angelica Yulo, said she immediately called her son to boost his confidence and he vowed to recover in his two remaining events. She added that her son’s defeat in the Tokyo Olympics served as his biggest motivation to do even better.
“Sinasabi niya na parang Olympics na ‘yung competition niya, maliit o malaking competition. Parang iti-treat niya ‘yung competition na sinasalihan niya as Olympics na. Kasi before hindi ganun ang mindset niya eh,” said Angelica.
Yulo struggled to snag a medal in the Tokyo Olympics after placing fourth in the vault with 14.716. In his past Facebook post, Yulo promised to “come back stronger,” hinting at his bid for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
“Hindi naging madali ‘yung daang tinahak namin, pero sulit lahat ng pagod at iyak. Maraming salamat din po sa mga taong nagdasal at sumuporta sa amin,” said Yulo last August. “Babalik po kaming malakas!”
