Does faith have a place in today’s modern world?
The advent of technologies that made the whole world interconnected has seemingly caused people to lose their connection to their faith, said Bishop Jonathan S. Ferriol, newly appointed Deputy Executive Minister of the Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch), prompting him to call for prayers and guidance for a generation that is “in dire need of saving.”
“So many Christians today, especially in the western hemisphere, have walked away from the church and became deniers of the existence of God,” Bishop Ferriol lamented during the PMCC (4th Watch)’s Golden Anniversary celebration at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Tarlac last August 27.
While others have walked astray, over 42,000 Fourth Watchers from different parts of the world who attended the church’s 50th anniversary celebration proved that devotion still holds a place in the modern world. These 4th Watchers came from different parts of the country for PMCC (4th Watch)’s Golden Anniversary and joined their church leaders, led by Apostle Arsenio T. Ferriol, to celebrate this milestone.
Undeterred by the rain, 4th Watchers tirelessly participated in an eight-hour display of faith, marked by a solemn worship service, exuberant exaltations, and lively performances of joyful songs to the Lord.
Celebrating the past
PMCC (4th Watch) traces its roots to the divine calling received by their founder, Apostle Ferriol, whom they regard as the Goodman of the House prophesied in Matthew 24:43. For the church, Apostle Ferriol was anointed with the revelation on the times and seasons of the Second Coming of Christ.
During its early years, members would congregate in a modest roadside chapel in Marikina. Despite its unassuming facade, the congregation’s resilient spirit served as their beacon of hope. Through the efforts of their first members, PMCC (4th Watch) was able to construct a two-story concrete house of worship in Marikina, which now serves as their Main Church.
The church also saw a global expansion under the leadership of Bishop Ferriol, who serves as the Regional Overseer of North America and the islands of the Western Pacific. Today, there are more than 1,000 local churches across 72 countries all over the world, with plans to establish more local churches in Africa and North America already underway.
“To reach this far in our history with dynamic expansions around the world and irrefutable growth in every imaginable facet of faith and spirituality is indeed worthy of our celebration,” Bishop Ferriol said.
PMCC (4th Watch) has also been actively organizing medical missions and outreach programs through their Dalaw Kalinga Foundation. Even before the foundation’s formal establishment in 1997, Filipinos from far-flung communities have received medical and spiritual assistance through their various humanitarian programs.
Supplementing fervent devotion with acts of compassion and servitude have, and continue to be, the mark of a follower of Christ in today’s interconnected world, according to Bishop Ferriol.
“Just as Jesus Christ dedicated His life to selflessly caring for others, our brethren at PMCC (4th Watch) will continue striving to replicate His life of compassion, empathy, and selflessness,” he said.
In anticipation of last August’s festivities, Fourth Watchers have also been actively participating in the church’s most recent outreach programs, such as their National Bloodletting Drive (in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross) and their Grand Medical Mission. More than 4,000 blood bags were collected during the bloodletting drive, and over 8,000 Filipinos received medical services from the medical mission.
The church’s role in community service has not gone unnoticed. Last August, the Senate passed Senate Resolution no. 719, which recognized PMCC (4th Watch)’s role in nation-building. Senator Bong Go, who co-authored the bill with Senators Cynthia Villar, Imee Marcos, and Nancy Binay, presented a copy of the resolution during the church’s Golden Anniversary celebration.
Expanding the future
While members of PMCC (4th Watch) maintain that they do not know the exact day, month, and year of Christ’s return, they believe that the Second Coming should be eagerly awaited, not feared. This sense of anticipation was evident in the faces of 4th Watchers, most particularly among members of the younger generation who participated in the cultural presentations and mass demonstrations during the Golden Anniversary celebration.
Bishop Ferriol lauded the church’s youth and regarded them as the “backbone of our ministry.” He expressed gratitude for their active engagement in organizing the church’s events and volunteering for their short-term missions.
Inspired by the youth’s zeal, passion, and commitment to PMCC (4th Watch)’s mission of spreading the Gospel, Bishop Ferriol expressed confidence in the church’s future.
“As we enter our fifth decade, our brethren can expect a renewed vigor in carrying out our mission of championing Jesus’s command: to spread the message of the Gospel, with a voice loud and clear,” he said.
