(September 3, 2021) – Sen. Manny Pacquiao plans to carry out his campaign against drugs “in the right way” should he run and be elected as the country’s next leader in hopes of addressing the abuses committed in President Rodrigo Duterte’s ruthless policy.
Pacquiao admitted he was not against Duterte’s plan initially since he needed time to assess if it would work. But he was disappointed upon seeing the effect of the gruesome program on the alleged drug suspects while the narcotics trade still prevails.
“Kaya ko sinasabing ‘in the right way’ kasi maraming karapatang pantao ang nalalabag,” said Pacquiao on One News’ The Chiefs without elaborating on his plan. “‘Wag nating sabihing perfect naman ‘yung (programa) nila sa pagresolba ng droga (kasi) maraming naaapakang inosenteng tao.”
A drug war done right? Senator Pacquiao hints at anti-illegal drug plans in policy agenda for 2022
#TheChiefs | Sen. Manny Pacquiao says many rights are being violated in the administration’s current war on drugs, which is why he wants it done “in the right way”.

In 2016, Pacquiao defended the bloody drug war by attributing the widespread killings to drug lords instead of state forces. But he later castigated erring police officers who abused their power to create senseless deaths. He maintained, however, that Duterte never ordered the grim slayings despite his past pronouncements.
Pacquiao also denied the existence of extrajudicial killings over the past few years despite numerous reports and evidence. He also supported proposals reinstating the death penalty to execute drug syndicate leaders by firing squad.
“Inobserbahan ko siya pero later on, na-realize ko na minsan din may naaabuso rin,” said Pacquiao on News 5’s Deretsahan. “Mahalaga ang buhay pero ang gusto kong maparusahan at ma-firing squad sa harapan ng mga tao ‘yung nagpapasok ng droga rito sa ating bansa.”
More than 30,000 people have been killed in Duterte’s cold-blooded drug war, according to human rights groups, demanding justice for all the deaths primarily targeting the poor and the marginalized.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) could open an inquiry into the tough policy after the review being conducted by its pre-trial chamber. Victims of the cruel drug war “overwhelmingly support” the possible probe, according to the ICC Registry.
But Duterte and his cohorts have refused to honor the possible ICC investigation. Duterte has maintained that the country’s justice system works even if only the case of 17-year-old Kian Loyd Delos Santos has led to a murder conviction on police officers.
Pacquiao, who was once Duterte’s ally under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan, did not answer if the controversial leader should be held accountable for the numerous killings as what human rights organizations have repeatedly called for.
“Ewan ko kung satisfied ‘yung mga tao sa performance ng ating pangulo, ng ating gobyerno,” said Pacquiao. “Hindi ko kalaban si presidente. Kaibigan ko siya at totoo lang ako magsasalita. Ayaw kong bolahin ‘yung taumbayan.”
