BURNED TO DEATH | Police arrest five suspects in the ex-Batangas solon slay case
January 22, 2020 , 02:58 PM

(JANUARY 22, 2020) – Police arrested five men, suspected to be involved in the brutal killing of a former lawmaker and two others in a southern province, the head of police criminal investigation group said on Wednesday.

Brigadier General Joel Coronel, director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, did not give much details on how and why the suspects were arrested and where and when the arrests were made.

“We are just finalizing the investigation report and we’ll inform you accordingly,” Coronel told reporters, adding the details of the investigation will be disclosed in due time.

Former Batangas congressman Edgar Mendoza, who went to into private legal practice after his term ended in the legislature, was found dead with two others in Tiaong, Quezon province.

His body was charred beyond recognition after his killers torched his car and left it at a!San Francisco bridge in Tiaong on January 9.

Mendoza and two others were supposed to go to Calamba, Laguna when the suspects intercepted the lawmaker’s vehicle, police said.

Malacañang has condemned Mendoza’s murder and vowed justice will be served.

“We assure the bereaved family of the deceased that justice will be accorded by prosecuting the people behind this dastardly crime to the fullest extent of the law,” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said.

Police said they still have to establish the motive behind Mendoza’s murder. Police are looking into three possible angles but refused to divulge them until they have proofs and arrest those behind the gruesome killing.
