(March 11, 2024) – At least 77% of Filipinos expressed their willingness to fight for the Philippines in case of conflict with a foreign country, a survey by the OCTA Research Group showed.
It noted that the highest percentage was recorded in Mindanao at 84% while the lowest figure was tallied in Visayas at 62%. Metro Manila logged 76% while the rest of Luzon was 79%.
Among socio-economic classes, at least 67% of those from Classes ABC, 80% from Class D, and 68% from Class E also signified their willingness to defend the Philippines against a foreign nation if a conflict arises.
“Across regions, the highest percentage of adult Filipinos willing to fight for the country in a conflict with a foreign enemy is recorded in Davao Region and Caraga at 96%, closely followed by Soccsksargen at 95%,” added the survey.
In terms of age, the OCTA Research Group noted that the highest rate of 87% was tallied in the 45-54 bracket. Both the 25 to 34 and 35 to 44 brackets posted identical percentages at 77% each, followed by the youngest group—18 to 24—at 74%.
“There are more adult Filipinos in the urban areas (80%) who are willing to fight for the country in the event of a conflict with a foreign enemy compared to those in the rural areas (73%),” added the research group.
A total of 1,200 individuals were interviewed for the survey, which was conducted from December 10 to 14, noting a margin of error of ±3% and a confidence level of 95%.
The results were released at a time when the Philippines continues to face the aggression of China in the West Philippine Sea.
Last week, the China Coast Guard (CCG) and maritime militia vessels yet again conducted “dangerous maneuvers” and used water cannons against the vessels of the Philippines on a rotation and resupply mission in Ayungin Shoal.
“The use of water cannons by the CCG vessels shattered the wind shield of UM4 (Unaizah May 4), causing minor injuries to at least four personnel on board,” said the National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea in a statement, adding that UM4 had to return to mainland Palawan because of the damage.
President Bongbong Marcos Jr. expressed alarm over the latest bullying of China, although he said the incidents were not enough for the Philippines to invoke its Mutual Defense Treaty with the United States.
“Once again, we will make our objections known and we hope that we can continue to communicate to find a way so that such actions are no longer seen in the West Philippine Sea,” said Marcos.
China has refused to recognize the claims of foreign countries by repeatedly insisting on the validity of its so-called 10-dash line even if the Permanent Court of Arbitration already nullified it in 2016.
