(November 11, 2021) – The Philippines has joined over 100 countries around the world in committing to reverse forest loss and land degradation in less than ten years, at a major international conference that sought to end the climate crisis, the finance department announced on Thursday.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has transmitted President Rodrigo Duterte’s letter to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, expressing the new global declaration to end deforestation is in line with the nation’s targets in reaching sustainable forest management.
“Sustainable and resilient agriculture and forestry are essential for commodity production and achieving the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), promoting economic development, reducing poverty, ensuring food security, and improving the livelihoods of billions of people,” Duterte said in the letter.
The Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use called on nations to conserve and accelerate the restoration of forests, and facilitate policies promoting sustainable development that do not drive deforestation and land degradation.
The declaration also demanded signatory nations to ramp up finance and investment for sustainable agriculture and forest management, forest conservation and restoration, and support for indigenous peoples and local communities.
Some 136 nations have endorsed the commitment during the 26th United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) as of November 8, including China, Russia, and Brazil, according to the UK government.
The Philippines, with a forest cover of 13.2 million hectares or over 62% of its land area, is considered to be one of the most severely deforested nations in the tropics.
Duterte lifted an almost nine-year ban on new mining permits earlier this year, sparking outrage among environmental advocates over its adverse effects on the forest loss in the country. This also drove fears of further development aggression towards indigenous peoples who live close or within sites eyed by mining companies.
According to international environmental initiative Global Forest Watch, the country had lost 46.8 thousand hectares of natural forest from 2002 to 2020, which is equivalent to as much as 27.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
The country’s National Climate Change Action Plan for 2011-2028 included a provision that pushed for the protection and rehabilitation of critical ecosystems in the country.
