CORONAVIRUS | Health authorities monitor 11 tourists as pandemic fears rise
January 27, 2020 , 02:28 PM

JANUARY 27, 2020 – Philippine health authorities on Monday placed a close watch on about a dozen tourists who have showed symptoms of a new strain of coronavirus infection spreading from China that could explode into a global emergency.

In a news briefing, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the patients under investigation had travel history in Wuhan, China where the novel coronavirus reportedly originated but there were other suspected cases as fears mounted of a pandemic.

In China, about 80 people had died and nearly 3,000 people were infected globally by a virus that originated from wild animals sold in a Wuhan market.

“There are 39 novel coronavirus-related health events that were reported to the epidemiology bureau of the Department of Health (DOH),” Duque told reporters. “11 of the 39 accounts for 26 percent are considered patient under investigation.”

The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) are already running tests on the specimens from the patients, Duque said.

Should the tests yield positive result for the non-specific pancoronavirus, the samples will be sent to Australia.

However, Duterte emphasized that there is no confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in the country.

The five-year-old Chinese boy earlier reported by the agency in Cebu tested negative for the virus based on the tests run by the Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory in Australia.

Several countries, including the Philippines, have restricted travel to and from Wuhan as a preventive measure.

Scientists have also started to work on developing potential vaccines.

Duque has been advising Filipinos to frequently wash their hands and cover their mouths when coughing.

He has also told the public to avoid unprotected contact with farm animals and even shaking of hands.
