COVID SURVIVOR | Filipino recovers in Japan, another gets infected in Hong Kong

FEBRUARY 19, 2020 – The first Filipino who got infected with the deadly virus from China has recovered from the disease in Japan, the foreign affairs department said on Wednesday, as another contract worker in Hong Kong was found infected.

In a statement, the foreign affairs department said a crew member of a luxury cruise ship, Diamond Princess, was discharged from a hospital in Japan more than a week after he showed symptoms of the coronavirus disease and was removed from the ship to a medical facility.

He is the first Filipino diagnosed with the virus from Wuhan, China.

There were 40 other Filipinos found infected with COVID-19 aboard the cruise ship which was placed under 14-day quarantine until today in a port in Yokohama

“The Embassy is in touch with those who have been admitted to the hospitals in order to ensure their well-being and to provide them any assistance they need,” the foreign affairs department said.

In a separate statement, it also confirmed a Filipino household worker was put in a quarantine in Hong Kong.

But she has not shown any signs of the disease and may be released from a medical facility if tests will show she is free of the virus.

“The Consulate General continues to monitor the Filipina’s condition and will render all necessary assistance as needed,” it said.

REPATRIATION UNDERWAY

The cruise ship’s Filipino crew was earlier found to have been infected with COVID-19 along with nine other people onboard the Diamond Princess.

A Chinese tourist who had disembarked in Hong Kong was believed to have been the source of the infection in the ship.

The number of infected crew and passengers has risen to 550 out of the 3,700 people aboard the Carnival Corp-owned ship.

The Philippine government has started finalizing plans to bring home about 500 Filipinos who will be placed in quarantine facilities upon arrival in the country.

The fast-spreading virus has killed more than 2,000 in China alone. Only five deaths were reported outside China, including one in Manila.

Despite these figures, global health authorities assured that the virus can be still contained and the survival rate is high compared with other coronavirus outbreaks recorded in history. (Karen Macalalad/MM)
