(April 27, 2024) – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) reported a substantial decline in the country’s crime rate over the first 21 months of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr.’s term compared to the same period under the previous administration.
In a recent meeting at Malacañang, DILG secretary Benhur Abalos highlighted the notable improvements in peace and order across the nation, with 71,544 index crimes tallied from July 1, 2022 to April 21, 2024.
It is a noticeable decrease from the 196,519 index crimes recorded from July 1, 2016 to April 21, 2018. The Philippines was then led by former president Rodrigo Duterte.
“Ito ay patunay na hindi tumitigil ang ating kapulisan sa pagtupad ng kanilang mga sinumpaang tungkulin na labanan ang anumang karahasan sa ating bansa,” said Abalos, who also heads the National Peace and Order Council, in a media release.
The DILG also reported a significant reduction of 16% in index crimes in the first three months of 2023 compared to the first three months of 2022.
Additionally, the average monthly crime rate also fell from 21.9% to 15% in the same comparative period.
Abalos added that these improved numbers are a “testament of the PNP’s (Philippine National Police) commitment to the people.”
Duterte made combatting crime a main priority, even infamously proclaiming that he would get rid of criminality and drugs in just six months. He later accepted that this was not feasible.
He waged a bloody war on drugs during his iron-fisted rule. His administration claimed that this reduced illegal activities, but it was also widely criticized for human rights abuses and extrajudicial killings.
According to human rights groups, around 30,000 deaths were tallied during Duterte’s brutal war on drugs, including vigilante killings.
Marcos vowed to tweak the government’s anti-drug policy. But independent studies showed that drug-related violence has continued under his watch.
The DILG vowed to increase its efforts to address the country’s drug problem.
“Patuloy tayong magsusumikap upang mabawasan ang kahit anong krimen at tuldukan ang paglaganap ng iligal na droga sa bansa,” said Abalos.
