MAY 29, 2020 – The country’s oldest and largest telecommunications company on Friday assured its customers that no client data was breached when the Twitter account of its support service was hacked, the digital services provider said in a statement.
The Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) company, part of the conglomerate led by Manuel V. Pangilinan, said the hackers had not tampered or extracted private information on their clients.
“We would like to inform the public that a thorough investigation conducted by our Cyber Security Operations group has shown that there is no record of customer data download or exfiltration from the @PLDT_Cares Twitter account,” said PLDT in a statement.
PLDT said it would make a formal report to the National Privacy Commission about the hacking incident.
The telecommunications firm also guaranteed it would further enhance its cybersecurity protocols to prevent a repeat of the incident.
On Thursday, a group of hackers belonging to Anonymous took control of the Twitter account of PLDT support group, @PLDT_Cares, but it did not affect the company’s services and network.
The Twitter account, @PLDT_Cares, had a post at noon calling out the company. It said: “As the pandemic arises, Filipinos need fast internet to communicate with their loved ones. Do you job. The corrupt fear us, the honest support us, the heroic join us. We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.”
The incident came after several netizens complain of slow internet connections during the community quarantine.
