(April 10, 2023) – President Bongbong Marcos Jr. on Monday urged Filipinos to take inspiration from the heroism of war veterans in moving into the future in the face of modern-day challenges confronting the country.
Marcos, in his speech during the Araw ng Kagitingan celebration in Bataan, maintained that the heroism of World War II veterans remains present as many Filipinos do their part by being “in the service of others.”
“We can look to the future with confidence, with the knowledge that the most noble Filipino quality of heroism is aflame and burns brightly in every true Filipino,” said Marcos during the program at Mount Samat National Shrine.
While the war has long gone, Marcos acknowledged that the country is facing “a new global challenge,” touting the positive qualities that Filipinos exemplified during the COVID-19 crisis. He added that many people are making personal sacrifices for their families, communities, and even the country.
“We celebrate all the individual acts of valor and of sacrifice. We celebrate the Filipino spirit. We celebrate our countrymen’s deep, abiding love of every Filipino: Love for our land, love for our people, and love for our freedom,” said Marcos.
The Philippines marks Araw ng Kagitingan, a holiday that remembers the heroism of Filipino soldiers when Japanese soldiers occupied the country, annually on April 9. Marcos moved the celebration to April 10 this year as the original date coincided with Easter Sunday.
In an earlier statement, Marcos praised the Filipinos’ “indomitable spirit” despite the adversities the country has to deal with. He added that everyone must speak out against discrimination and help those in need.
“We have staunchly proven time and again that we are never the same after each adversity for we always rise to meet every challenge head-on with grit, grace, and determination,” said Marcos in a statement yesterday.
Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio likewise urged the people to look back on the legacy left by heroes in pushing for “inclusive and resilient progress.”
“Let us walk together on the same path of bravery as we pursue socioeconomic advancement, uphold lasting reforms, and encourage one another in promoting the deep love of country that is founded on our shared quest for a brighter tomorrow for every Filipino,” said Duterte-Carpio in a statement.
Amid the commemoration, Marcos guaranteed that they are working to improve the pension system for war veterans before considering other possible benefits that may be provided to them.
Under Republic Act 11164, former President Rodrigo Dutert increased the monthly pension of old-age war veterans from P5,000 to P20,000 as long as they are not recipients of any pension from the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
“Ang aming tinitingnan ay kung paano natin patibayin ang sistema ng pagbigay ng pension sa ating beterano dahil sa kasalukuyan, kapag hindi natin inayos ang sistema, hindi tatagal,” said Marcos.
